The University Lodge of Ancient, Free, and Accepted Masons was founded in 1910 by staff, graduates, and friends of the University of Toronto. This strong connection to higher education continues today, with members from all Toronto universities.
Most past and present members are university graduates, reflecting the Lodge’s name and heritage. Our brethren are professionals across various fields, including Architecture, the Arts, Biology, Mathematics, Music, Business, International Relations, Law, Pharmacy, Medicine, and more.
Several members have held prominent leadership roles, including two Lieutenant Governors of Ontario, two University of Toronto Presidents, and numerous deans and chairmen. Many have served on the University’s Board of Governors.
University Lodge 496 GRC was established on June 23, 1910, with M.W. Bro. Sir John M. Gibson as Master. The Lodge was formally constituted and consecrated on October 12, 1910. By-laws were first approved on October 28, 1910, and revised in 1911, including a list of 75 Charter Members.
Our members have consistently held high office within Freemasonry, with several serving as Grand Masters, District Deputy Grand Masters, and in other significant positions. A few members, such as W. Bro. A.M. Fallis, W. Bro. Wm. Dowds, and R.W. Bro. C.A. Sankey, achieved remarkable longevity, serving as Masons for over 75 years.
In October 2010, the Lodge’s centennial was celebrated with the Grand Master, M.W. Bro. Raymond Daniels, who authorized the use of gold-trimmed aprons and regalia. This event was notable for the rare occurrence of both Grand Wardens being from University Lodge.
University Lodge continues to welcome driven, accomplished men from diverse professional and academic backgrounds, fostering a vibrant and dynamic community that upholds the rich traditions of Freemasonry while looking toward a bright and promising future.
